Irene Tomaszewski Obituary

Amherst — Irene (nee Morris) Tomaszewski, born on December 16, 1922 in Newcastle, England died on Friday, February 2, 2018 at Amherst Manor after a brief illness. Irene and her family arrived in the United States from England on the steamer ship “Amerika” in 1923 and spent the remainder of her life in Lorain County.

Irene recently celebrated her 95th birthday with more than 50 family members and friends at Amherst Manor where she had been a resident since 2010.

As a child, Irene grew up on East 33rd Street in South Lorain, attended Whittier Junior High and graduated from Lorain High School.After World War II, she married Raymond Lucas Tomaszewski, who proudly raised 5 children together in Lorain.

In addition to being a homemaker, mother and housewife, Irene also had a professional career; working at Fisher’s Foods on Broadway in Lorain and later at Economy Sales/ESCO on Oberlin Avenue in Lorain, rising from sales clerk to assistant manager.

Irene was also active in many social, civic and community organizations, including the original Lorain Admiral King High School booster club, the Lorain Senior Center, Nativity BVM Church, Lorain and its Altar and Rosary Society. She also enjoyed camping on the Vermilion River, gardening, traveling and spending time with her extended family, which includes 13 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Tomaszewski was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond in 2001; parents, William and Florence (nee Futter) Morris; and brother, William “Bill” Morris.

Survivors include her 5 sons, Robert (Christine) of Lorain, John (Jane) of Tiffin, Raymond (Sharon) of Lorain, Terrence (Monica) of Amherst, and Mark of Foothill Ranch, CA; grandchildren, Jason Tomaszewski of New Haven, Connecticut, Matthew Tomaszewski of Cranberry Township, PA, Alexius Tomaszewski of Akron, Maxium Tomaszewski of New Albany, Michelle Tomaszewski of Los Angeles, CA, Tracey Shearer of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Katherine Tomaszewski of Lorain, Gabrielle Tomaszewski of Lorain, Elizabeth Tomaszewski of Lorain, Jacqueline Tomaszewski of North Ridgeville, Joseph Tomaszewski of Austin, TX, Amanda Martinez of Gilbert, AZ, and Nathan Tomaszewski of Laguna Hills, CA; and sister Jennie Krugman of Amherst.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 from 4:00 – 8:00 PM at Reidy-Scanlan-Giovannazzo Funeral Home, 2150 Broadway, Lorain, (440) 244-1961. Nativity B.V.M. Altar & Rosary Society will recite the Rosary Prayer at the funeral home on Tuesday at 4:30 PM. Closing prayers will be at the funeral home on Wednesday at 10:20 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM, Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at Nativity B.V.M, 418 W. 15th Street, Lorain, OH, Fr. Gerald J. Keller, officiating with Deacon Robert J. Dybo, assisting. Christian burial will take place at Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Township, OH. The family asks that donations be made in Irene’s memory to the Valor Home (a transitional home for veterans), 221 W 21st Street, Lorain, OH 44052.
