Sam Catanzarite

Lorain- Sam J. Catanzarite, 91, passed away on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at Mercy New Life Hospice in Lorain, OH.

He was born on December 18, 1923 in Lorain where he was a life-long resident.

Sam attended Lorain City Schools, after which he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp in 1941 and served six months in Leeds, Utah. He enlisted in the United States Navy in January 1944 where he was stationed at Great Lakes Naval Station for basic training. Sam was schooled in contact mine assembly and was stationed in Hawaii, attaining the rank of Mineman Second Class. After serving his country, Sam was honorably discharged in 1946. He worked at American Ship and Thew Shovel as a burner welder. He also worked for Lorain County as a clerk.

Sam is a life-long member of the Church of St. Peter in Lorain. He was an original charter member and also an honorary life member of the Italian American Veterans Post 1, and a regular member of the VFW in Elyria. He was an avid bowler and golfer experiencing the joy of a hole in one at Thunderbird Golf Course in Huron. Sam enjoyed crossword puzzles and playing cards. He took great pride in the upkeep of his home, lawn, and landscape.

He is survived by his brothers, Joe (Ellen) Catanzarite, Julius (Marge) Catanzarite and Fred (Janice) Catanzarite; sisters, Catherine "Cutty" Catanzarite, Antoinette Feldkamp and Rose Bardar; brother-in-law, Charles Short; sixteen nieces and nephews; and good friend, Marie Bonaminio.

Sam was preceded in death by his wife, Mary (nee: Lewis) Catanzarite in 1994; parents, Fred and Rosa (nee: Gallo) Catanzarite; sister, Mary Ann Szabo; and brother, Dominic Catanzarite.

The family would like to thank the staff at Anchor Lodge Assisted Living Unit and New Life Hospice for the excellent care given to our brother in his time of need.

The family will receive friends at Reidy-Scanlan-Giovannazzo Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 2150 Broadway, Lorain (440) 244-1961 on Friday, April 24, 2015 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM. Closing prayers will be held at the funeral home on Saturday at 9:00 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 AM, Saturday, April 25, 2015, at the Church of St. Peter, 3655 Oberlin Ave., Lorain, OH, Fr. Craig M. Hovanec, Pastor, officiating. Christian burial services will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where military honors will be conducted by the IAV Post 1. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter's Church Building Fund.
