Amherst – Alfonso “Al” M. Sabbarese, 61, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, January 2, 2020 following a seven year battle with cancer.
Al was born on October 8, 1958 in Lorain, OH to his loving parents, Dominic and Lucia (nee Citro) Sabbarese.
He was raised in Sheffield Twp, OH and graduated from Clearview High School, Class of 1976. Al went on to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting, Class of 1980. He married Robin (nee Semelsberger) on June 15, 1985. Al was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Church in Elyria. He worked at Finest/Edwards/Pick N Pay from 1974 – 2006 and he was a Manager at Apple’s from 2006 – 2016. Al cherished spending time with his family, gardening, sports, coaching youth baseball/soccer, handyman projects, and the outdoors.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 34 years, Robin (nee Semelsberger) Sabbarese; daughter, Christine (Derek) Schwartz; son, Dominic Sabbarese; grandchildren, Ellie and Thomas; and cousins, Nadine (John) Baloun, Teresa (Tim) Allsop and Edward (Jeanne) Citro; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dominic and Lucia Sabbarese.
The family will receive friends at Reidy-Scanlan-Giovannazzo Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 2150 Broadway, Lorain (440) 244-1961 on Sunday, January 5, 2020 from 2:00 – 6:00 PM. Closing prayers will be held at the funeral home on Monday at 9:15 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, January 6, 2020 at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 41295 North Ridge Rd, Elyria, Fr. Russell Rauscher, officiating. Christian burial services will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Lorain. Memorial donations may be made in Al’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to American Cancer Society, P.O. BOX 22478, Oklahoma City, OK 73123.
