Avon Lake – Carl “Bull” Peter Hartman Sr., 84, a life-long resident of Lorain, passed away on March 3, 2023 at Main Street Care Center.
Carl was born on August 14, 1938 to Margaret (nee Schemmell) and Peter Hartman. He attended Lorain City Schools, graduating in 1956 from Lorain High School and later attended Bowling Green State University where he received both his undergraduate and master’s degrees. He was a proud member of the 1956 Lorain High Buckeye Conference championship basketball team and a member of the football, track and baseball teams while at Lorain High. After spending time playing minor league baseball for the Detroit Tigers, he returned to Lorain where he taught school and coached football, basketball and track at Longfellow Junior High and later his alma mater Lorain High, including coaching the 1987 Buckeye Conference Championship team on which his sons played. He retired in 1991 enjoying many years of fishing with his friends on Lake Erie.
He is survived by his sweetheart and wife of 63 years, Nancy, who he met on a blind date arranged by his cousin who was dating one of Nancy’s friends. Together they raised six children, Sue, Carl (deceased), Chris, Kate, Joel and Mike. They have 14 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and another on the way. Carl also leaves behind his sister Lois, “brother” Ken, and many nieces, nephews, students, and athletes who looked up to him.
Carl’s family will receive family and friends at Reidy-Scanlan-Giovannazzo Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 2150 Broadway, Lorain, Ohio on Tuesday, March 7, 2023 from 4:00 – 6:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 8, at St. Anthony Parish, 1305 East Erie Ave., Lorain, Ohio, Fr. Edward Smith Pastor, officiating. Christian interment services at Calvary Cemetery in Lorain will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 10, 2023. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Food for the Poor www.foodforthepoor.org, 6401 Lyons Rd., Coconut Creek, FL 33073 or St. Vincent de Paul Society, 1305 East Erie Ave., Lorain, Ohio.
