Gary William Maxwell Sr.

Lorain- Gary William Maxwell Sr., 78, passed away on Monday, September 11, 2023 at Mercy Hospital in Lorain.

He was born to his loving parents, Joseph William and Rhea Eleanor (nee Kendig) Maxwell Sr., on April 25, 1945 in Lorain, OH. Gary graduated from Lorain High School, class of 1964 in Lorain, OH where he was a lifetime resident. He was a standout football player all 4 years of his high school career and received multiple college offer before starting his service in the Army. Gary served in the United States Army from April 20, 1966 until he was honorably discharged in December 29, 1967. Gary married the love of his life, Theresa R. (nee Miksa) Maxwell, on June 21, 1969. He was a heavy equipment operator and retired from Jonick Trucking. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Lorain. Gary enjoyed painting and restoring classic cars. He was especially known for his painting technique for flames. He was an avid hot rod enthusiast and spent many happy weekends cruising to Goodguys events in his 1930 Ford Model A. Gary was an avid fan of the Browns and the Buckeye’s football teams. He enjoyed watching them win and spent many weekends hoping they would.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 53 years, Theresa Maxwell; parents, Joseph and Rhea Maxwell; brother, Mark Maxwell; and nephew, Chad Johnson.

Gary is survived by his children, Eric (Holly) Maxwell, Melissa (Jonathan) Pyc, Christine Maxwell and fiancé J.L. Davison, and Gary (Ivette) Maxwell Jr.; 12 grandchildren, Kayla, Tyler, Alyssa, Hannah, Alivia, Nathan, Chase, Aliyah, Payton, Adison, Josh, and Corey; and great-grandchildren, Carysn, Mariana, Lilyann, and Charlie; siblings, Beverly (Ronald) Coates, Ronald (Barbara) Maxwell, Joseph (Laurie) Maxwell, and Robin (Paul) Svboda.

Gary’s family will receive family and friends at Reidy-Scanlan-Giovannazzo Funeral Home, 2150 Broadway, Lorain, OH on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church, 309 W 7th St., Lorain, OH on Wednesday, September 20, 2023 at 10:00 AM with burial at Calvary Cemetery, Lorain, Fr. Daniel O. Divis, Pastor, officiating. Memorial donations may be made in Gary’s name to the American Heart Association, PO Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692.
