Marie A. Bonaminio

Marie A. Bonaminio, 95, a lifelong resident of Lorain, OH, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 12, 2021 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Marie was born on January 12, 1926 to Rocco and Lena (nee Sofo) Gioffre, in Lorain, OH. Marie graduated from Lorain High School; Class of 1944A. As owner of Bonaminio’s Lorain Flower Shop for nearly 50 years, Marie was recognized by Lorain County commissioners for her contributions to the community via a proclamation in May 2020, and hailed her business as a treasured, family-owned, community icon. Her generosity and community involvement are exemplified by her participation in various organizations, including Zonta, Lorain Palace Civic Center, Lorain Arts Council, The Lakeland Women’s Club, Lorain Historical Society and the IAV Ladies Auxiliary, amongst others.

Marie will be posthumously inducted into the Lorain Alumni Association Hall of Fame. As a self-taught artist, Marie won many awards for her artwork and opened up her home to share her talents with others. As a member of the congregation of St. Peter Parish, several pieces of her original artwork grace the Stations of Cross, where her memory will forever live on.

Her many achievements include being a beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, an artist, teacher, author, tv celebrity, as well as an extraordinarily successful businesswoman. She also had a great love of animals, as evidenced by her dedication to the Friendship Animal Protective League.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Clemente Bonaminio; parents, Rocco and Lena Gioffre; daughter, Celeste Bonaminio Kelley; grandson, Steven Andrew Bonaminio; brothers, Dominic and Frank Gioffre, and many beloved pets.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, James Oscar and Joani (nee Noble) Bonaminio; sister, Violet Elek; sister-in-law, Louann Gioffre; grandchildren, James Noble and Lauren (nee Moore) Bonaminio, Dana Noble Bonaminio and Todd Hellmann, Chris Noble Bonaminio; great grandchildren, Elizabeth Joan Bonaminio, Leo Perry Bonaminio, Lena Josephine Hellmann, Matteo James Hellmann; step great grandchildren, Kyle, Megan, Kaityln and Kevin Hellmann; cousins, Alice Ann Bagola and Maria Farshman; many nieces and nephews; dear family friends the Campana and Soto families.

Private services and Christian Burial were held at Calvary Cemetery in Lorain, OH on Tuesday, February 16, 2021, officiated by Fr. Gerald J. Keller. Memorial donations may be made in Marie’s name to the St. Jude Children Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105 or Friendship Animal Protective League of Lorain, 8303 Murray Ridge Rd, Elyria, OH 44035.
