Rosa Rodriguez Obituary

Rosa Q. Rodriguez, 94, of Lorain, OH,  passed away on Sunday, June 13, 2021 in her home surrounded by her family.

She was born August 23, 1926 in San Juan, Puerto Rico to parents, Rogelia Rosado and Rosendo Quiles. In 1950, Rosa and her children joined her husband, Jacinto, who had come to Lorain in search of work and a better life. While at home raising her four children, Rosa taught herself how to speak, read, and write English.

Rosa’s work career started at Lorain Towel Supply, making 34 cents an hour, then on to France Mfg. in Westlake, and back to Lorain working at St. Joseph’s Hospital in housekeeping until her retirement in 1991.

Working at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Rosa’s daily work routine was very often intertwined with taking time with patients to pray with them and ease their pain. She was often called from her housekeeping job and suited up in scrubs to be a translator in the operating room. Rosa was one of the first volunteers to work under the “Patient Pride” program, bringing comfort and joy to the patients.

Because of her dedication and commitment to her job, Rosa was nominated and selected in the first group of recipients for the St. Joseph All Star Team. Her award was in recognition for her consistency in doing the ordinary in an extraordinary way each and every day. Rosa was also the recipient of the 2005 “You Make A Difference” Our Hometown Hero award from United Way, volunteering over 15 years at Catholic Charities 8th Street Family Center.

Besides volunteering at the St. Joseph Hospital, Rosa also spent her free time visiting nursing home residents, many years cooking for the homeless at 8th Street Catholic Charities, and distributing food at St. Joseph Shelter. Rosa had also participated numerous times in the Elyria 6 mile Crop Walk raising money to feed the hungry and raise awareness.

As much as Rosa so enjoyed cooking for her family, friends, and church events, she enjoyed dancing even more. Rosa was known to dance the night away at weddings and parties. She loved being surrounded by family and friends to celebrate birthdays and holiday events. She enjoyed working outdoors and especially walking the backyard with her beloved dog Cody, picking up twigs and putting them in a box.

And most importantly, being very involved in worship and prayer at her beloved church, Sacred Heart Chapel. Rosa participated in many ministries: serving as an Extraordinary Eucharistic Minister, member Legion of Mary, member of St.Vincent dePaul Society, and volunteered many hours at the annual “Fiestas” weekends.

Rosa is survived by her 4 loving children: three sons, Milton (Helen) of Calif., John and Arsenio of Lorain, and a daughter, Rosa (Frank) DeTillio of Lorain; grandchildren, Julie, Kimberly, Theresa, Tony, Michael, Michele, Joseph, Valerie, Lisa, and Christopher; 20 great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren; her favorite niece, Lourdes; and nephews, Raffie, Israel, and Javier.

Preceded in death by her parents; sister, Rosario Quiles Rosado; and nephew, Hector Aviles Quiles.
