Thomas J. Elwell Sr.
Lorain – Thomas J. “Tom” Elwell Sr., 93, passed away on Thursday, April 22, 2021 at Elmcroft Senior Living in Lorain, OH.
Tom was born on April 3, 1928 in Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated with honors from Holy Name High School, Cleveland, Ohio, in 1946 and John Carroll University in 1950. Tom married his high school sweetheart, LaVera Perron on December 26, 1950, and commenced a 65 year marriage, raising seven children. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on October 23, 1950, stationed in Germany and serving faithfully during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on September 23, 1952.
Tom and LaVera moved to Lorain in 1954. He worked for 36 years as a salesman for Nabisco, retiring in 1987. Tom and LaVera were devoted to their faith and active at St. Peter Church in Lorain. LaVera was parish secretary for 17 years and Tom served as a Lector, Eucharistic Minister, PSR Teacher, Pre-Cana Instructor, Parish Council, Altar Server for funerals, and always worked on the yearly parish festival. As Eucharistic Ministers, Tom and LaVera weekly would take the Holy Eucharist to parishioners who were homebound or at nursing homes.
Tom and LaVera’s later retirement years were spent wintering in Florida. They loved walking the beach and spending time around the pool. Tom was an avid Notre Dame fan from childhood, having not missed a football game, either on the radio, television or in person for 85 years. He played golf and loved all sports. Tom was also an avid reader, always in tune with local and world events. But his true passion in life was to be with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Anyone who met him loved him. He touched many lives.
He is survived by his children, LaVera (Teri) (David-deceased) Gaede, Thomas Jr. (Vicky), Michael (Donna), James (Karen), Timothy (Marianna), Lynn Wilhelm, and son-in-law, Patrick LaVeck Sr., grandchildren, Jeremy, Jessica, Megan, Matthew, Patrick Jr., Joseph, Robert, Michael Jr., Melissa, James Jr., Erica, Sophia, Isabel, J.T., Taylor, Madeline, and Emma, and fourteen great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, LaVera T. Elwell in 2016, his daughter, Colleen LaVeck in 1995, parents, George Elwell and Susan (nee Bereznay) Elwell, brother, Richard Elwell, and sister Kathleen Aspery.
The Elwell family will receive friends at St. Peter Parish, 3655 Oberlin Ave., Lorain, Ohio, on Tuesday, April 27, 2016 from 11:00 am until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 pm, Fr. Craig M. Hovanec, Pastor, officiating. Social distancing and masking will be observed. Christian burial services will follow the Mass at Calvary Cemetery in Lorain, with military honors by the U.S. Army.
